Petition Process
Non-Emory Programs are an option for students who cannot
find an academic match for their major on any of the approved Emory programs.
You can investigate Non-Emory programs by looking at the following websites:
www.studyabroad.com www.iiepassport.org www.goabroad.com You should then
consult with CIPA to ensure that the program meets Emory's standards and is
appropriate to your interests and level of preparation. There are some programs
from which Emory College can not accept transfer credit. You must petition
through CIPA for approval to transfer credit for academic work.
If you are approved for a Non-Emory program, you: (a) remain registered at
Emory as an off-campus student, (b) receive general transfer credit for approved
courses taken on the program, (c) utilize federal and state financial aid,
though not Emory grants or scholarships. Petition process You must submit
a Non-Emory Petition form to CIPA to receive approval to transfer credit.
Your petition must demonstrate a compelling academic reason for studying on
a Non-Emory program. Your petition will be evaluated by the Review Committee
based on 1) academic justification for choosing that program, 2) academic
rigor and quality of the program, 3) the appropriateness of your plan of study
to your overall academic plan, 4) the quality of the match between your goals
and the opportunities that the program offers, 5) the strength of your preparation
at Emory, 6) level of cultural immersion or integration in the host country.

Academic Issues
To receive recognition for coursework done overseas toward
a particular major or minor, you must obtain approval from the relevant
academic department. This approval is given by a signature on the Transfer
of Credit Form attached to the Petition Form. Most departments require
that approval be given before you study abroad and set limits on the number
of courses to be counted in this way. Be sure to consult with the departmental
faculty study abroad representative early in your planning. If one of the
courses that you are taking overseas is similar to an Emory course that
fulfills a general education requirement, you can petition to have that
course count for that requirement. To fulfill any requirement, you must
gain the approval of the relevant Emory department (i.e. a student who
wants to fulfill area III.A and feels that the course he/she is taking
abroad is the equivalent of Art History 101 must gain the approval of the
Art History department, even if the student is a Political Science major).
Petitions must be submitted by the deadline; no late petitions are accepted,
and retroactive credit will not be given.
Transcripts
All transcripts for study abroad must be sent to: Center for International
Programs Abroad 1385 Oxford Road Emory University Atlanta, GA 30322.
The Center for International Programs (CIPA) will review all transcripts and
make a recommendation to the Registrar regarding the amount of credit that
should be applied to your degree.
CIPA may require more detailed information about the specific courses taken
and will often consult with appropriate departments at Emory as well as the
study abroad program to determine the appropriate transfer of credit. You
should be prepared to answer questions about the courses and the work you
have done and to produce course syllabi, materials, and assignments if required.
