Grant for International Research
SIRE grants fund Emory College students for domestic and international research. The international grants are jointly funded by the Office of Undergraduate Education and CIPA. The SIRE Grants provide research support for projects related to students’ academic work, whether for a course, an honors project, or independent work under the supervision of a faculty mentor.
Grants are available to students in any field; students may receive up to $4000 for international research. This research could come out of a study abroad program attended, be the consequence of a course taken on campus, or may have arisen while “community serving” in the Atlanta community or abroad. In some cases, the grant may lead into an honor's thesis completed during the senior year. The SIRE Grant also provides opportunities for students to present research in progress to their peers through research symposia on campus and nationally.
Students intending to apply for an international SIRE grant are recommended to contact Cornelia Lindenau at culinde@emory.edu or 404-727-9009.
For more information, application deadlines and materials, please visit the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Science Research Abroad (IRES and DAAD RISE Programs)
International Research Experience for Science Students (IRES)
The SIRE International Research Experience for Science Students (IRES) program provides summer grants for students working in a science laboratory in another country. The program is co-funded by the SIRE/IRES program and CIPA. The goal is to give students a research experience similar to one that they could have on a US campus but in an international location. Students may not apply directly, but must be nominated by their department.
DAAD RISE (Research Internship in Science and Engineering) Program
A similar program is available to participate in scientific research in Germany through the German Academic Exchange (DAAD). Students submit an application through the SIRE/IRES program and indicate their interest in participating in DAAD RISE.
For details on application materials and program details, please visit SIRE/IRES website through the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Additional resources are available on the Science Experience Abroad website through the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Independent Undergraduate Projects Abroad
As Emory College continues to emphasize undergraduate research and service, as well as general internationalization, academic departments are increasingly sponsoring Emory undergraduates to engage in independent activities abroad (independent study, undergraduate research, service-learning, and/or academic internships). In order for Emory College to respond quickly to situations such as international crises or natural disasters that may jeopardize our student’s well-being and to assist all of our students in the relevant locations, CIPA maintains a central registry. CIPA keeps records of what students are doing abroad, where they are, for which time period they are abroad and who the multiple national and overseas contacts are. Students will also be provided with a supplementary health insurance through CIPA. This registry aims at keeping track of Emory College students receiving credit or financial support from their departments. In the event of a crisis, CIPA can coordinate Emory College’s response, assisting the administration and departments as appropriate. In such circumstances, CIPA will also serve as the College’s primary contact for the families of students and for the media.
Emory College Handbook for Undergraduate Service, Research and Independent Study Abroad
It is thus critical that all departments assure that their students are registered. The registration process will be run through CIPA. In this Emory College Handbook for Undergraduate Service, Research and Independent Study Abroad, departments and students will find the forms that need to be handed in, a timeline of when they should be received by CIPA and important basic pre-departure information.
Emory Global Health Field Scholar Awards
The Emory Global Health Institute funds three field scholarship programs to which Emory students are eligible to apply. The three types of GHI Field Scholars are (1) Individual Field Scholars, (2) Team Field Scholars, and (3) Partner Site Field Scholars.
The global health experience can happen in any country, including the U.S. The determining factor is that the experience be with a vulnerable and underserved population. The student must justify the experience and the population. For additional information please see the Global Health Institute’s website: http://www.globalhealth.emory.edu/fundingOpportunities/globalLearning.php
These three scholarship programs provide Emory students with opportunities to work on a variety of short-term global health projects in the field in partnership with in-country organizations. College undergraduate students go through a first application round through the CIPA office; an Emory College faculty committee will review, score and prioritize the applications that they receive from all the students in the college and will then forward them to GHI. A multidisciplinary team make final decisions for the award winners from all the professional schools and the college.
The deadline for 2008 is March 10, 2008
Notification should be by April 11, 2008, if not before.
