Getting Started
Choosing a study abroad program or other overseas experience can be a daunting task. Whether students want to study Tibetan Buddhism in India, engage in biological fieldwork in Australia, or volunteer with an NGO in South Africa, CIPA can help make it happen!
CIPA offers approximately 80 semester study abroad program options around the world. These programs are offered during the course of a normal academic year – Fall semester, Spring semester, or the entire academic year. Approved options can be organized directly by Emory, students can enroll directly into overseas institutions, or students participate on a program through a “third party provider.” All programs are approved by Emory’s Education Abroad Committee to ensure quality in all aspects. Semester programs abroad generally do not conform to the same dates as the Emory calendar, so students will work with their CIPA advisor regarding arrival and departure dates.
CIPA also offers approximately 20 faculty-led summer study abroad programs each year. Nearly 350 students take advantage of this study abroad option. These discipline-focused programs are organized by Emory faculty members who also teach the Emory classes in the overseas location. Programs typically last five to six weeks, although there are shorter programs (3 weeks) and longer programs (8 weeks). Students may live in host families, international residence halls, or hotel accommodations, depending on the format of the program. Students are eligible from the summer after their freshman year through the summer after their senior year, and they earn direct Emory credit on the programs.
Students can also participate in other opportunities abroad such as research, service, or international internships.
What Parents Need to Know
Our professional organization, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, has produced a publication for parents of study abroad students. For a copy of this booklet, please contact CIPA.
