Emory Semester Programs

Emory Semester Programs are administered by Emory College or by other institutions through special agreement with Emory. These programs are generally run during the academic year and may run for one semester or for the entire academic year. They provide academic opportunities that complement offerings at Emory and allow a high degree of integration into local culture and student life. Local living situations will vary with circumstances, according to the location and the language skills and academic preparation of the students. Through most Emory Semester and Emory Affiliated Programs, you have the opportunity to take coursework at universities abroad and to live with families and students from another culture. If you participate in one of these programs you:
a) remain fully registered at Emory while you are abroad,
b) receive Emory credit for approved courses taken abroad,
c) take full financial aid and/or Emory Scholarships with you.

General GPA Eligibility Requirements

For Emory semester programs, CIPA requires students to have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Some programs may require a higher GPA and/or language or area studies course pre-requisites. Students with below 3.0 GPA are encouraged to petition to apply to certain programs. Students are also strongly encouraged to meet with a CIPA Advisor to discuss their interest in study abroad and to explore their program options. Please click here for more information.

Education Abroad Committee

The CIPA staff works closely with the Education Abroad Committee, a body of faculty members who meet on a regular basis to oversee policies regarding study abroad and to approve semester and summer program options. The Education Abroad Committee ensures that all Emory approved programs meet the academic standards of Emory College.

Emory Credit and Cost Policy

Emory programs and Emory-affiliated programs are administered by Emory College or by other institutions through special agreement with Emory. All Emory and Emory-affiliated programs are thoroughly reviewed by a faculty committee and the Center for International Programs Abroad. They are generally run during the academic year and, depending on the specific program, may run for one semester or for the entire academic year. The goal of these programs is to provide Emory students with a study abroad experience that includes a high degree of integration into local culture and student life. If students participate in one of these programs, they:
a) remain fully registered at Emory while they are abroad,
b) receive direct Emory credit for courses taken,
c) take full financial aid and/or Emory Scholarships with them.

Since students are fully enrolled at Emory and receive Emory credit, they pay regular Emory tuition for participation in an Emory or Emory-affiliated program. Emory tuition covers all the academic costs of the program, which may differ from Emory tuition. This payment is regardless of the cost advertised and charged by the program itself. Students pay non-academic costs (i.e. room and board) in part or in full to Emory through a Program Fee or directly to the study abroad organization or overseas institution depending on the program. Please see the program descriptions for the most up-to-date list of charges for specific programs. This system is designed to enable the University to offer students study abroad opportunities on the same basis that they attend Emory. It allows them to make regular progress toward the degree and to carry financial aid and scholarships with them. It also gives Emory the opportunity to exercise greater oversight of the study abroad experience and to better advise students planning to go abroad. This ensures that the study abroad experience of an undergraduate is commensurate with the quality of education he/she is receiving at Emory. Since the implementation of this system, study abroad has become available to many more students and the number taking advantage of this possibility has almost tripled.

Non-Emory Programs

Emory both sponsors and administers a wide variety of programs for a Study Abroad experience through CIPA. While these programs cover a wide variety of locations and academic focuses, it is possible that you could be interested in participating in a program which is not affiliated with our university. Students wishing to apply for non-Emory programs should refer to the Non-Emory petition process for further details.

Business, Graduate Students, and Professional Schools

Emory College offers a liberal arts education in the arts and sciences. The CIPA office oversees study abroad opportunities for all Emory College undergraduate students. For undergraduate students majoring in business, please contact the Gozuieta Business School regarding study abroad opportunities during the academic year. Students majoring in business are eligible to attend the CIPA Summer programs.

Graduate students in arts and sciences should consult with their academic advisor and learn about additional resources from the Institute for Comparative and International Studies.

Students enrolled in the professional divisions including the School of Nursing, School of Law, School of Medicine, Rollins School of Public Health, or Candler School of Theology should contact the relevant school or division for more information about international opportunities.
