Seniors Studying Abroad
Can I study abroad my final semester at Emory?
Students are able to study abroad during their final semester before graduation, provided they follow CIPA’s regular application procedures, have the appropriate approval from their department, and discuss their graduation requirements with their Academic Advisor and/or the Office for Undergraduate Education (OUE). In addition, there are several considerations that students must be aware of when choosing to be away from Emory during their last semester.
Students should understand that:
- If they expect to have very specific requirements met while abroad, it is not guaranteed that they will be able to fulfill these requirements at the foreign institution. [This situation can happen for a variety of reasons: a class is not offered, a professor falls ill, the student fails the class and therefore does not receive credit, etc.]
- Writing Requirements cannot be filled abroad.
- P.E. requirements generally cannot be filled abroad.
- They must enroll in a full load of courses as defined by the host institution, regardless of whether or not they need that many credits to graduate. [Enrollment in a full course load is CIPA’s policy for all study abroad students.]
- Their graduation may be delayed because their overseas transcripts may not arrive at CIPA in a timely fashion. [This situation can happen for a variety reasons: the university system abroad functions on a different calendar than Emory’s; the student owes fines to the university’s library, a housing fee, or other financial obligations to the university; the university abroad is waiting for professors to submit grades.] Most students are able to graduate by the end of the summer.
- The processing of their transcripts may be delayed if they have not had ALL their classes pre-approved or attained all equivalents before returning to Emory. [This includes courses that are not necessarily needed for graduation.]
It is recommended that they see Dean Carolyn Denard in the Office for Undergraduate Education (cdena01@emory.edu or 404-727-4074) for degree certification questions and that they are encouraged to submit their application for graduation prior to leaving for study abroad.
They must acknowledge that they have read the above statements and that they are making the choice to study abroad during their final semester at Emory by signing a statement of responsibility with their CIPA Advisor. For more questions, please contact CIPA at: cipa@emory.edu or 404-727-2240.
