General Information

Emory University has offered high-quality summer study abroad experiences around the world to Emory students for over thirty-six years. A summer program is one of the first ways you can study abroad with Emory, and hopefully this short-term experience inspires you to participate in an even longer experience such as a semester or year abroad later in your academic career. As an Emory student, you can study abroad on an unlimited number of summer study abroad programs, starting as early as the summer after your freshman year all the way up to the summer after your senior year.

These popular programs provide opportunities for you to study aspects of another country's culture and society in disciplines spanning the social sciences, the sciences, and the humanities. Emory’s summer study abroad programs are planned and directed by Emory faculty, and the courses are also taught by Emory faculty. The courses are designed to take full advantage of the overseas setting in which they take place.

Depending on the program, you can earn credits towards your major or minor, fulfill general education requirements, or take classes for elective credits. Since these programs are offered in the summer, you can study abroad without interrupting regular coursework and credits and grades earned overseas on these programs are granted on the same basis as those obtained on campus.

Studying abroad can ignite an interest in a potential career and help you develop essential job skills. Improved foreign language skills, cross-cultural understanding, and greater self-reliance and self-confidence can benefit those seeking careers in virtually any field. Overseas experience is attractive to employers who value individuals who are able to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

The Center for International Programs Abroad, which administers Emory’s summer study abroad programs, requires that all applicants:

(a) Have and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, although some programs may require a higher GPA. (Please see specific program descriptions for details.)

(b) Be in good academic standing.

(c) Be a high school graduate.

(d) Be at least 18 years of age.

(e) Be currently enrolled at Emory and will have completed the first full year at Emory prior to the summer study abroad program.

If you do not meet criteria A, B, or D, you can petition for a waiver by:

(a) Obtaining two letters from faculty members supporting your request for a waiver of the specific criteria.

(b) Addressing your request for a waiver in your application essay – give specific reasons that support your application to study abroad despite not meeting the specified pre-requisite, such as GPA requirement.

Information for Graduating Seniors

Graduating seniors are eligible to participate in summer study abroad. Students can either defer graduation until the end of the summer or apply to the Graduate School as a student in Special Standing.

Students who wish to defer graduation are still eligible to walk with their class with permission from the Office for Undergraduate Education. Emory summer study abroad courses would count toward the cumulative GPA. Students currently receiving a courtesy scholarship or financial aid would remain eligible. Visit www.college.emory.edu/current/graduation/index.html to download a degree application. For Summer 2008, students must submit degree applications no later than July 3, 2008. NOTE: If the grades for all summer study abroad courses are not reported and posted to a student's transcript by the deadline for Emory College certification of degrees in the term in which the student applies, the diploma will not be dated for that term. Rather, the diploma will be dated in the actual term in which all grades were recorded on the transcript.

Students who do not wish to defer graduation may apply to the Graduate School as a non-degree student in Special Standing. Click here to view the special standing application. The application and official transcripts must be received as part of the Summer Study Abroad Application packet delivered to CIPA. The Graduate School has agreed to waive the $50 application fee for summer study abroad students. Students in special standing do not receive merit awards or financial aid, and the grades earned on summer study abroad do not appear on the undergraduate transcript. A student in special standing who later wishes to enroll in a Graduate School degree program must submit a formal application for admission to the Graduate School.

Application Process and Deadlines

Applications will be accepted starting January 2, 2008. Applicants must submit to CIPA the Emory Summer Study Abroad Application with all accompanying documents and a $350 non-refundable deposit. The entire application must be complete for you to be considered for summer study abroad. Emory Summer Study Abroad Application.

THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 3 . Some programs generally close before the end of January, so early application is advised. Depending on the program, applications are either considered on a rolling basis in order of receipt or reviewed as a group. Once programs are full, applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Late applications will be considered for those programs not yet full. NOTE: The British Studies, Iberian Studies, and Italian Studies typically close before the end of January.

If you need to cancel your application for any reason, you must do so in writing to Margie Fishman, Summer Study Abroad Coordinator, Email: mffishm@emory.edu, no later than March 15. After this date, in addition to the non-refundable $350 deposit, other fees will be charged to your student account for unrecoverable expenses paid on your behalf.
