General Information

Emory's summer study abroad programs provide opportunities for you to study aspects of another country's culture and society in disciplines spanning the social sciences, the sciences, and the humanities. Emory’s summer study abroad programs are planned and directed by Emory faculty, and generally the courses are also taught by Emory faculty. The courses are designed to take full advantage of the overseas setting in which they take place. As an Emory student, you can study abroad on an unlimited number of summer study abroad programs, starting as early as the summer after your freshman year all the way up to the summer after your senior year. Depending on the program, you can earn credits towards your major or minor, fulfill general education requirements, or take classes for elective credits.

Studying abroad can ignite an interest in a potential career and help you develop essential job skills. Improved foreign language skills, cross-cultural understanding, and greater self-reliance and self-confidence can benefit those seeking careers in virtually any field. Overseas experience is attractive to employers who value individuals who are able to learn quickly and adapt to changing conditions.

Eligibility Requirements

The Center for International Programs Abroad, which administers Emory’s summer study abroad programs, requires that all applicants:

(a) Have and maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average, although some programs may require a higher GPA. (Please see specific program descriptions for details.)

(b) Be in good academic standing and remain in good academic standing.

(c) Be a high school graduate.

(d) Be at least 18 years of age.

(e) Be currently enrolled at Emory and will have completed the first full year at Emory prior to the summer study abroad program.

If you do not meet criteria A, B, or D, you can petition for a waiver by:

(a) Obtaining two letters from faculty members supporting your request for a waiver of the specific criteria.

(b) Addressing your request for a waiver in your application essay and give specific reasons that support your application to study abroad despite not meeting the specified pre-requisite, such as GPA requirement.

Information for Graduating Seniors

Graduating seniors are eligible to participate in summer study abroad. Students can either defer graduation until the end of the summer or apply to the Graduate School as a student in Special Standing.

Generally, students choose to defer graduation in order to receive financial aid or to complete final requirements for graduation.  Students who wish to defer graduation are still eligible to walk with their class with permission from the Office for Undergraduate Education. Emory summer study abroad courses would count toward the cumulative GPA. Students currently receiving financial aid or a courtesy scholarship would remain eligible. Visit www.college.emory.edu/current/graduation/index.html to download a degree application.

Please take note of the deadline for degree application submission. If the grades for all summer study abroad courses are not reported and posted to a student's transcript by the deadline for Emory College certification of degrees (generally early to mid August for summer graduation), the diploma will not be dated for that term. Rather, the diploma will be dated in the actual term in which all grades were recorded on the transcript.  In order to graduate on time at the end of the summer, students should be sure to remind their summer program director that they are intending to graduate at the end of the summer and to complete all program assignments in a timely manner so that grades can be posted by the deadline.

Students who do not wish to defer graduation may apply to the Graduate School as a non-degree student in Special Standing. Click here to view the special standing application. The application and official transcripts must be received as part of the Summer Study Abroad Application packet delivered to CIPA. The Graduate School has agreed to waive the $50 application fee for summer study abroad students. Students in special standing do not receive merit awards or financial aid.  The grades earned on summer study abroad do appear on the undergraduate transcript but are not calculated into the GPA. However, students should note that if they later apply to graduate/law/medical school, the summer grades will be seen by these universities, even if they are not part of the undergraduate GPA.  Students in special standing who later wish to enroll in a Graduate School degree program must submit a formal application for admission to the Graduate School.

Application Process and Deadlines

Applications will be accepted starting January 4, 2010. Applicants must submit to CIPA the Emory Summer Study Abroad Application (on-line), plus all accompanying documents and a $350 non-refundable deposit - please view your chosen program's application checklist for details. The entire application must be complete for you to be considered for summer study abroad.

In order to apply, students complete the new online application form by clicking on the Apply Now button on the respective summer program page.

THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 2, however many programs will have earlier priority deadlines. Be sure to view your chosen program's page to view the deadline. Some programs generally close before the end of January, so early application is advised. Depending on the program, applications are either considered on a rolling basis in order of receipt or reviewed as a group. Once programs are full, applicants will be placed on a waiting list. Late applications will be considered for those programs not yet full. NOTE: The British Studies, Iberian Studies, and Italian Studies typically close before the end of January.

If you need to cancel your application for any reason, you must do so in writing to Branka Gajic, Summer Study Abroad Coordinator, Email: bgajic@emory.edu, no later than March 15. After this date, in addition to the non-refundable $350 deposit, other fees will be charged to your student account for unrecoverable expenses paid on your behalf. Please see the Refund Policy for further details.

Summer Study Abroad Fair

The Summer Study Abroad Fair for Summer 2010 programs will be held in the DUC on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Summer study abroad program directors and faculty will be on hand to provide details about their programs, and returned students will be available to share their experiences.
