General Information
As defined by Emory College, transient study is credit for summer school away from Emory College and is open to any Emory College student with fewer than 68 academic credit hours. (PLEASE NOTE: Students who want to complete transient study within the United States must submit an application directly to the Office of Undergraduate Education.)
Therefore, International Transient Studies is for students on F-1 or J-1 visa status, with less than 68 academic credit hours, who seek to return to their country of origin during the summer following their freshman year. Any student interested in returning to their home country and receiving credit for classes taken MUST apply via an online application through the Center for International Programs Abroad (CIPA) office. No student will receive credit for classes taken if they have not submitted an online application to CIPA and been approved for International Transient Studies by the stated deadlines.
For students (both international and U.S. permanent residents) who would like to study overseas and who do not meet the eligibility requirements for International Transient Studies please make an appointment to meet with a CIPA Advisor to discuss the study abroad opportunities available.
Student Eligibility
To apply for International Transient Studies, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the end of preceding semester 2. Cumulative credit hours of 68 or less at the end of studies in home country 3. Good academic standing 4. Enrolled full-time at Emory the semester prior and following their studies in home country 5. Successful completion of course pre-requisite(s) if applicable 6. Accreditation of university or institution in home country 7. On J-1 or F-1 visa status (and can provide a copy of I-20 or DS 2019 form)
In the case where students have lived in multiple locations abroad, ‘home country’ or ‘country of origin’ is defined as the country where the student completed their high school education. U.S. permanent residents or citizens who attended high school in the United States are NOT eligible.
If you are not on J-1 or F-1 visa status, but think you should still be able to apply, please contact Vallan Kantner (vkantne@emory.edu) to explain your situation.
Course Information
Most students use this opportunity to satisfy General Education Requirements or entry level courses. No writing requirements, physical education courses, advanced level courses or internships may be taken. Also, if you wish to receive Lab credit with a science course the official transcript issued at the end of your studies must show the lab separately from the actual science course. If the Emory equivalent of your proposed course requires a pre-requisite you must have taken the pre-requisite in order to take the next course in your home country.
All courses must be taken for a letter grade and students must earn a “C” in a course in order to receive credit (if you receive a “C-“ or below you will not receive any credit and the course will not appear on your Emory transcript). You may not receive credit that will result in you having more than 68 credit hours. Grades earned from International Transient Studies do not count toward your Emory College GPA – only the credit transfers. All credit earned on the quarter system is converted to semester hours by multiplying the credit earned by .66.
Whatever semester hour credit you are awarded from your home institution will appear exactly as-is when transferred to your Emory record on approved course. For example, if the home institution awards you 3 credit hours for a course you will receive 3 credit hours on your Emory transcript, even if the Emory course equivalent is worth 4 credit hours.
Interested students are responsible for applying directly to their home institution and making sure that institution sends CIPA an official transcript after the completion of their studies. The official transcript must be sent directly from the home institution, and cannot be brought in by the student. Also, students have until the end of the following Fall semester to receive transfer credit. If an official transcript has not been received by the end of the following fall semester, the student will receive no credit.
No transfer work or credit will be awarded for course work done during the summer without prior approval. You must apply for International Transients Studies and be approved; otherwise you will receive no credit.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CIPA is coordinating the International Transient Studies course approval process. You DO NOT need to seek approvals from individual faculty members or departments. In your application, you may obtain course descriptions from the website of the school you plan to attend. Pages taken from a bulletin or catalog of the host school are also acceptable. Please consult the Emory College Catalog to find your proposed course equivalents. The host institution course and the proposed Emory equivalent should be similar in key themes and content. Please include descriptions of the proposed Emory course equivalent(s) from the catalog, along with course description(s) from the host institution.
